ROBERT KATZ, JD, LLM Since founding the firm in 1980, Mr. Katz has specialized in all facets of taxation as it related to income (i.e., partnerships, corporations, and individuals), estate and gift taxation, as well as estate and trust planning. In this latter area, his skills are applied from plan development and assessment through to the expert drafting of all necessary documents for plan implementation. Mr. Katz, formerly a conferee for the Internal Revenue Service, is also a skilled advocate on behalf of his clients in their representation of various tax matters before the Internal Revenue Service and New York State. In all areas of his involvement, Mr. Katz maintains a close, hands-on role with clients, as well as their accountants and financial/Investments Advisors. Mr. Katz brings over 35 years of taxation experience to his role at KBK. Despite the complexity of the many taxation matters he handles, his is adept at explaining difficult concepts in easily understood terms. This communications ability is highly valued in his position as a full-time member of Hofstra University's faculty. At the University, Mr. Katz has earned the designation as the Hofstra University Chaykin Distinguished Teaching Professor of Taxation. He is only one of six Distinguished Professors in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business and, was the 1979 recipient of the Hofstra University Distinguished Teacher Award as voted by the graduating students. In 1997, he was honored by the Hofstra University Corporate Development Council for his service to the University and Outstanding teaching. One achievement which stands out among Mr. Katz's many accomplishments is his leadership role in establishing a tax preparation clinic at Hofstra University. The Clinic, which he supervised for 20 years, was designed to provide senior citizens and other taxpayers who could not afford tax preparation services, assistance in preparing their tax returns. Mr. Katz trained student volunteers to prepare tax returns at no cost at libraries throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The program, which subsequently became associated with the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, became the largest University related program nationwide in number of volunteers and tax returns prepared. Mr. Katz's initiative and vision in creating this program earned him the Commissioner of Internal Revenue Award for Volunteerism and and award from the Nassau Library System. His VITA program also helped gain for Hofstra University a Presidential Award for Volunteerism. Also to his credit is the development of Katz Tax Seminars, LL; a well recognized, widely attended continuing education program registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy as a sponsor of continuing education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. In this capacity, Mr. Katz is also recognized by the New York State Bar Association as a provider of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits.
